Bigger than mainland Tasmania
The twelve shires our clinics serve cover 65,241 square kilometres of Western Australia. That is more ground than mainland Tasmania and more than ten times the size of Greater Perth, looked after by one practice that knows every town in it. Combined land area of the twelve shires with a Livingston Medical clinic, using the published area of each local government area. Wundowie is in the Shire of Northam. Tasmania is the Geoscience Australia figure for the main island. Greater Perth is the Australian Bureau of Statistics Greater Capital City area. Distances are in a straight line.
Fees
We are a mixed billing practice, so not every consultation is bulk billed. Medicare pays a rebate on eligible consultations. Standard consultation $105; Long consultation $175; Repeat script without a consultation, where offered $30; Referral renewal without a consultation, where offered $30. If cost is a worry, please talk to our reception team.
Telehealth
We are not a city call centre. Our doctors work in country clinics and hospitals across the Wheatbelt, Great Southern and Fitzgerald Coast, so you talk to people who know your town, your hospital and how far the drive really is. Fees apply. Check in about two minutes whether a Medicare rebate is likely to apply. This telehealth service does not prescribe benzodiazepines, opioids, stimulant medication or medicinal cannabis. In an emergency call 000.
Teaching and research
Livingston Medical is a teaching practice. Medical students, GP registrars and rural generalist trainees learn with us in real country towns, and our clinics take part in research that aims to improve how rural Australians are cared for.
- Medical students from UWA and Notre Dame. Medical students from The University of Western Australia and The University of Notre Dame Australia do their rural placements with us, in towns such as Ravensthorpe, Hopetoun and Narembeen, learning alongside our specialists in the clinic and the local hospital.
- Scholarships for rural and remote students. We fund scholarships for rural and remote medical students, linked to placements in our towns, so the doctors of tomorrow can train where they will one day work.
- Specialist training for GPs and rural generalists. GP registrars train with us on the RACGP and ACRRM pathways, supervised by our specialist GPs and specialist rural generalists.
- Learning together every month. Our specialists and registrars meet every month for clinical education, with guest speakers from universities, hospitals and health services.
- Multimorbidity Integrating Care Study, With Curtin University's Centre for Clinical Research and Education (Recruiting now). Running at participating Livingston Medical clinics. It looks at whether adding telehealth to chronic disease care improves health, quality of life and care for rural patients living with two or more long term conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or lung disease. It uses de-identified information and a few short surveys over two years. Your usual care does not change.
- Rural community trial, With Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Curtin University (Underway). A five year randomised controlled trial with Harvard and Curtin researchers, with Livingston Medical as the community partner. It is built to grow local skills and jobs in our towns rather than fly researchers in.
- SARCOCARE, With Curtin University, with Dr Michael Livingston as a chief investigator (Grant application). Community based, AI enabled exercise training to prevent and treat sarcopenia, the loss of muscle strength and mass that comes with age, for older adults in rural Australia, delivered through multidisciplinary primary care. It is being put forward for Medical Research Future Fund support.
- Clinical studies, With The University of Western Australia (Ongoing). Our clinicians and patients take part in clinical studies with UWA researchers. Each study will be listed here as it opens to patients.
Occupational health
Pre-employment medicals, drug and alcohol testing, health surveillance and injury management, delivered by our specialist GPs, rural generalists and nurses across the Wheatbelt, Great Southern and Fitzgerald Coast. Full work medicals are available in six of our towns and drug and alcohol testing in eight, with more clinics being added as our teams train.
- Pre-employment and pre-placement medicals. Medical and functional assessments matched to the physical and safety critical demands of the role, with a clear fitness for work outcome sent to the employer.
- Drug and alcohol testing. Pre-employment, random, post-incident and for-cause testing by trained collectors, with chain of custody collection to AS/NZS 4308 for urine and AS 4760 for oral fluid, and analysis by a NATA accredited laboratory.
- Health surveillance. Audiometry and spirometry on calibrated equipment by trained staff, and other periodic monitoring for workers exposed to noise, dust and other workplace hazards.
- Periodic and return to work medicals. Scheduled medicals for existing workforces, and fitness for work reviews after illness or injury.
- Injury management. Prompt assessment and treatment of work injuries, WorkCover WA certificates of capacity, and return to work planning with the employer and insurer.
- Emergency skills on the ground. Many of our specialist rural generalists also staff the local hospital emergency department, so serious workplace injuries are seen by specialists trained in emergency care.

For patients aged 10 and over, by telehealth across Perth and regional WA. Start an ADHD enquiry.

Patient information
Appointments
Standard appointments suit one or two straightforward problems. Please ask for a long appointment for several problems, a care plan, a mental health plan, a procedure, a full health check or anything you think needs more time.
We also offer telehealth by phone or video, nurse appointments, skin procedures, and work and licence medicals. Work medicals are booked with reception by phone or email.
If you need to be seen urgently, tell reception when you call. We keep time for urgent problems each day. If we cannot fit you in, we will tell you where to go.
Please book one appointment for each person who needs to be seen, and let us know as early as you can if you cannot come, so someone else can have the time.
When the clinic is closed
In an emergency call 000.
For free advice from a registered nurse, 24 hours a day, call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. They can tell you whether to wait, see a doctor or go to hospital.
Your nearest hospital emergency department is shown on each clinic page. In several of our towns the hospital is staffed by our own doctors.
Phone calls and messages
Our doctors do not usually take calls while they are seeing patients. Reception will take a message, and a doctor or nurse will call you back as soon as they can, usually the same or the next business day.
If it is urgent, tell reception, and they will put you through or ask a doctor or nurse to call you straight away.
Medical advice is usually given in an appointment rather than over the phone, so that the doctor can assess you properly.
We may send appointment reminders and recalls by text message to the mobile number we hold for you.
Email and online requests
Clinic email addresses are for bookings and practice matters, not for medical advice or anything urgent, and doctors do not read them. Ordinary email is not a secure way to send health information, so we do not send results or medical details by email unless you ask us to and accept the risk.
Repeat script and referral requests, new patient registrations and feedback sent through this website go straight to your clinic team.
Test results
When you have a test, ask your doctor how you will get the result. A doctor reviews every result that comes back.
If a result needs action, we will contact you, which may mean asking you to book an appointment. Please make sure we always have your current mobile number.
If your doctor asked you to come back for a result, please book. If you are worried about a result you have not heard about, call the clinic.
Reminders and recalls
We may contact you about checks and follow up care, such as immunisations, cervical screening or a test your doctor wants repeated.
Our clinics take part in national registers, including the Australian Immunisation Register and the National Cancer Screening Register. Tell reception if you do not want to receive reminders from us.
Interpreters and communication support
If you would like an interpreter, tell reception when you book. Professional interpreters are free for appointments with our doctors, through TIS National on 131 450. For medical matters we use a professional interpreter rather than family or friends where we can.
If you are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech impairment, you can contact us through the National Relay Service at accesshub.gov.au. Call 133 677 for TTY or 1300 555 727 for Speak and Listen, then ask for your clinic's phone number.
Access, support people and chaperones
Tell reception when you book if you use a wheelchair or mobility aid, have low vision or hearing loss, or need extra time or help, and we will make arrangements. Assistance animals are welcome.
You are welcome to bring a support person. You can ask for a chaperone for any examination, and your doctor may offer one for intimate examinations. If a chaperone is not available, you can rebook.
Students and doctors in training
We are a teaching practice. Medical students and doctors in training may be present or take part in your care, but only with your consent. You can say no at any time, and it will not affect your care.
Your rights and ours
You have the right to safe, respectful care and to be involved in decisions about it, as set out in the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights at safetyandquality.gov.au.
Our team has the right to work safely. We do not accept aggressive or abusive behaviour towards staff or other patients.
Your health record
You can ask to see your record or move it to another practice. Ask reception for a transfer form, or see our privacy policy for how we handle your information.
Fees
We are a mixed billing practice, so not every consultation is bulk billed. Please ask about fees when you book. Payment is due on the day.
Feedback and complaints
We want to hear what we do well and what we could do better. You can talk to the staff at your clinic, use the feedback form on this page, or email our Practice Manager at practicemanager@livingstonmedical.com.au.
We acknowledge every complaint and respond within 30 days.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Health and Disability Services Complaints Office on 1800 813 583 or at hadsco.wa.gov.au. Concerns about a registered health practitioner's conduct can also be raised with Ahpra on 1300 419 495 or at ahpra.gov.au. Privacy complaints are covered in our privacy policy.
MyMedicare
MyMedicare is a free, voluntary Medicare program that links you with the practice you usually see. It takes a few minutes and opens up more Medicare-funded care. In your Medicare online account. Open the Medicare app or Medicare in myGov, choose MyMedicare, and select the Livingston Medical clinic you usually attend. Our reception team then confirms it. At the clinic. Ask reception next time you visit. We can start the registration for you to finish in your Medicare account, or give you a paper form.
